Most portable batteries can already be returned free at larger shops, and councils provide recycling routes. Those services matter. But a collection point may be hard to find, inconveniently located or full when it is needed—and correct disposal still asks people to store spent cells, remember them and make a separate effort.
A UK study found 48% of respondents responsible for spent batteries had kept them at home instead of using the correct route; the most common reason was waiting until enough had accumulated.

Controls shown are design hypotheses. A competent fire engineer, waste specialist, insurer, manufacturer and treating partner must own verification before field use.
If a battery is hot, swollen, leaking, smoking, hissing, crushed or wet, the kiosk must refuse the deposit and direct the person away from handling it further to an approved local emergency or hazardous-waste route. A public kiosk is not a quarantine device.
